Illustrate 2012: May

Illustrate 2012: May

Sometimes I get these very short and slightly ridiculous e-mails from my sister.  It’s okay because I send them to her, too.  The one I received yesterday was titled Logo idea for funnovate and simply read, “Goose on a swing.  That is all.”  Cryptic?  Maybe.  Inspirational?  Definitely.

As the end of the month was quickly approaching and I’ve been very busy working on a new service offering (to be revealed soon!) for my sustainability consulting firm, iSpring, I was feeling the pressure of what to draw for this month’s illustration.  Since last month’s illustration was a little more elaborate, I had decided that this month’s would be simple–also convenient because time was scarce.  However, I wasn’t feeling very inspired.  Then four little words meandered through my inbox–Goose. On. A. Swing.  You never know where inspiration will come from!

So with that, I give you this month’s illustration.

Illustrate 2012: April

I wasn’t sure what I was going to do for this month’s installment of Illustrate 2012, but then I started working on an illustration for wedding invitations for a friend of mine who’s getting married this summer.  She and her fiancé are into gnomes, so it only seemed fitting to incorporate them into the invitations.  They’re also getting married in their backyard, which is surrounded by woods, so the trees also seemed appropriate.  The hedgehog, however, is purely my doing.

It turns out, however, that they’ve decided to forgo the gnomes on the invitations for fear of receiving an abundance of gnomes as wedding gifts.  They’re all for gnomes, but really, how many gnome-themed tchotchkes does one couple need?  Plus, there are some pretty tacky wedding-themed gnome gifts out there.  To wit, check out this little beauty:

Tacky Gnome

And now you understand why their fear is a very real one.

Crafting a Wedding

Wedding Arbor - close up

Last October, I got married.  Like a lot of stuff in our lives, my fiancé–now husband–and I didn’t want to do things like everyone else.  Specifically, we didn’t want to feed into the wedding-industrial complex that says you need to buy, buy, buy and spend, spend, spend for an event that represents only several hours–albeit several wonderfully amazing hours–of your life.  It’s a racket, really.  So we set to work crafting a wedding that was about us and not stuff.  As you might expect, this meant making a whole lot of things for the wedding, often from reclaimed/reused items.

While we were planning the wedding, a number of people commented that I should be blogging about all the stuff we were doing to make our wedding as sustainable as possible, so that other people could see how it can be done and be inspired to do the same.  The problem was that, while that sounded great in theory, I really didn’t have a whole lot of extra time to be doing something like that because, well, you know, I was planning a wedding.  So instead, I figured I’d save it all up until some later date to share with the world.  That day has come.  I invite you to take a little trip down recent-memory lane with me and see how we put together a handmade wedding that was about us–not stuff.  (Fair Warning: This post is a little long, so if weddings aren’t your thing, you might want to stop right here.  And if you don’t want the details but like wedding eye candy, you can just scroll through the pictures.)
